Yeonghwadang Hall

Built in the 18th year of King Sukjong’s reign, Yeonghwadang Pavilion was once used as a site of state examination during the Joseon period. It is home to a hanging tablet written by King Yeongjo himself, while the courtyard of the building, called Chundangdae, served as the site of the final state examination. Today, however, the courtyard is warded off by the walls of the Changgyeonggung Palace. Yeonghwadang also served as a banquet hall or an archery range for the king. Its use as a state examination hall came about during the reign of Jeongjo.
