Stele for the History of Jogyesa Temp...

This stele was commissioned by Jigwan (former head of the Jogye order), who lamented the lack of monuments that commemorate the 80-year history and significance of Jogyesa Temple in the history of Korean Buddhism. It was completed on October 8, 2009, bearing an inscription made of nearly nine thousand characters. The stele's inscription details the history of Jogyesa Temple and Korean Buddhism in the modern period, from the resistance of Korean Buddhism to the Japanese project of Buddhist integration between Korea and Japan during the Japanese Occupation to the contemporary history of the order.
